Job DescriptionJob Title: MIG Welder – Heavy Gauge SteelJob Description This role focuses on setting up, operating, and tending welding, soldering, and brazing machines to produce high-quality welds on heavy gauge stainless and mild steel components. You will primarily perform MIG welding, including multi-pass welds, to fabricate compactors, pavement maintenance equipment, and paving machinery. The position requires careful interpretation of blueprints, precise layout and setup of components, and strict adherence to safety and quality standards in a busy fabrication shop environment. Responsibilities • Set up, operate, and tend welding, soldering, or brazing machines in a fabrication shop environment., • Perform MIG welding on heavy gauge stainless steel and mild steel components, including material up to one inch thick., • Execute multi-pass welds, including 3-pass welds, to meet structural and quality requirements., • Lay out, fit, and weld components according to blueprints and work instructions., • Interpret and follow blueprints and drawings to ensure accurate fabrication of compactors, pavement maintenance equipment, and paving machinery., • Apply knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure proper fit, alignment, and structural integrity of welded assemblies., • Use wire feed welding equipment and related tools safely and efficiently., • Maintain a clean and organized work area and handle materials such as stainless steel, mild steel, carbon steel, and structural steel appropriately., • Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of welding gear and adherence to guidelines for noise, ultraviolet exposure, and shop hazards., • Manage individual workload to support production goals and meet deadlines., • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to resolve fabrication issues and continuously improve welding quality.Essential Skills, • Minimum of 2+ years of MIG welding experience on heavy gauge steel., • Proficiency in MIG welding on stainless steel and mild steel, including multi-pass welds up to one inch thick., • Ability to weld accurately from blueprints and technical drawings., • Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)., • Experience in a fabrication or shop floor environment using wire feed welding equipment., • Capability to safely lay out, set up, and weld components according to specified requirements., • Strong blueprint reading skills for structural and sheet metal fabrication., • Commitment to following safety protocols in a welding and fabrication setting.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Experience with flux core, TIG welding, stick welding, and other welding processes is beneficial., • Background in working with sheet metal, structural steel, and carbon steel components., • Familiarity with welding in a mechanic shop or non-assembly-line production environment., • Enrollment in or completion of a two-year welding program is considered a plus, and current students in such programs may be considered., • Ability to work effectively on 2nd or 3rd shift and manage tasks independently., • Attention to detail and quality in weld appearance, strength, and consistency.Why Work Here? Work Environment The position is based on a shop floor and fabrication environment that operates like a mechanic shop rather than an assembly line, with work progressing through different stages from start to finish. You can expect occasional loud noises of 80 dB or higher and limited exposure to ultraviolet rays from welding arcs and plasma torches, making adherence to safety procedures essential. The company supplies all welding gear and equipment except steel-toed safety boots, which you must provide; if you own a preferred welding helmet, you are welcome to use it. The role is available on 2nd shift (2:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Monday–Friday) and 3rd shift (10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., Monday–Friday), offering structured hours in a professional, safety-focused fabrication environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Brooklyn Park, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $30.00/hr.
