Job DescriptionJob Title: Mechanical Engineer (Professional Engineer – Healthcare HVAC)Job Description This role is for a highly skilled Professional Mechanical Engineer who specializes in the design of HVAC systems for healthcare environments, including hospitals, clinical laboratories, and outpatient facilities. You will lead complex mechanical engineering projects, ensure that HVAC and plumbing systems meet rigorous safety, infection control, and regulatory requirements, and deliver high-quality designs from concept through construction documents. Responsibilities • Lead the mechanical design of HVAC and plumbing systems for hospitals, clinical laboratories, and outpatient healthcare facilities, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards., • Plan, design, and coordinate HVAC systems such as VAV systems, VRF systems, heat pumps, and packaged rooftop units from initial concept through final construction documents., • Perform detailed heating and cooling load calculations and use appropriate software tools to size equipment, ducts, and piping accurately., • Design hydronic piping systems, including pump selection, pipe sizing, and distribution strategies that support efficient and reliable system performance., • Select and size fans, air-handling units, and other mechanical equipment to meet project-specific airflow, pressure, and performance requirements., • Develop plumbing system designs, including domestic water, sanitary, and other specialty systems, with attention to healthcare and laboratory needs., • Apply mechanical and plumbing building codes to designs, ensuring that all systems meet safety, infection control, and regulatory requirements for healthcare environments., • Prepare clear, detailed mechanical specifications and technical documentation for HVAC and plumbing systems on large, complex projects., • Collaborate closely with peers, drafters, and other disciplines to produce coordinated, high-quality construction documents using tools such as Autodesk MEP, AutoCAD, and Revit., • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, supporting the growth and development of the mechanical engineering team., • Work directly with clients to understand project requirements, provide a high level of service, and communicate design solutions effectively., • Evaluate and compare HVAC and plumbing system options, considering advantages, disadvantages, costs, and efficiencies to recommend optimal solutions., • Participate in quality reviews of mechanical designs and documents to maintain a high standard of accuracy and constructability., • Contribute to innovative, responsible design solutions that support safe, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare environments., • Take an active role in growing and leading the mechanical team, fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture.Essential Skills, • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program., • Minimum of 10 years of job-related experience in HVAC or plumbing design., • At least 3 to 5 years of experience specifically focused on large-scale healthcare or laboratory projects., • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), or the ability to obtain licensure by comity in the state of the hiring office., • Proficiency in the design of industry-standard HVAC systems, including VAV systems, VRF systems, heat pumps, and packaged rooftop systems., • Experience with hydronic piping design, including pump selection and pipe sizing., • Experience with duct sizing and fan selection for complex building systems., • Proficiency with heating and cooling load calculation software., • Experience with plumbing system design for commercial or healthcare facilities., • Strong knowledge and application of mechanical and plumbing building codes., • Proficiency with Autodesk MEP, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Outlook, and Microsoft Office., • Ability to design HVAC or plumbing systems from start to finish with minimal guidance while maintaining a high standard of quality., • Ability to collaborate effectively with peers and drafters to produce high-quality construction documents for large projects., • Strong client service skills and the ability to communicate technical concepts clearly., • Comprehensive understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems, including their advantages, disadvantages, costs, and efficiencies.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • ASHRAE Healthcare Facility Design Professional (HFDP) certification., • LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) credential., • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) credential., • Experience with medical gas system design and plumbing coordination in healthcare facilities., • Demonstrated passion for growing and leading a mechanical engineering team., • Interest in innovative, responsible design that supports sustainable and people-centered environments.Work Environment The role is based in an in-office, collaborative work environment that emphasizes teamwork between designers, engineers, and business operations professionals.
