ph3Job Title /h3 pSurgical Technologist /p h3Supervision Received /h3 pPhysician and/or Registered Nurse /p h3General Summary of Duties /h3 pSurgical technologists, also called scrubs and surgical or operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating room teams, which most commonly include surgeons, anesthesiologists, circulating nurses, and other support staff. /p h3Education, Experience, and Requirements /h3 ul liGraduate of an accredited surgical technologist program; or have completed an appropriate training program for surgical technologists in the Armed Forces; or be completing duties related to their employment by the federal government; or have equivalent training or experience. /li liPrefer 1–2 years clinical experience in an operating room setting; may accept 0–2 years of clinical experience in a related field. /li liMust be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS). /li /ul h3Essential Functions /h3 ul liPrepare and maintain medical equipment and instrumentation for surgical procedures. /li liSet up the sterile field to include surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions before an operation. /li liFollow state and federal facility regulations when attending to patients. /li liPerform pre-procedure preparations of the patient’s skin and body. /li liComplete a safety check prior to the start of the procedure on appropriate equipment and supplies. /li liAssemble both sterile and non‑sterile equipment and ensure it is working properly. /li liAssist with preparation for patient procedure as needed. /li liTransport patients to the procedure room and assist with positioning on the procedure table. /li liDrape the patient with surgical drapes per procedure. /li liPass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. /li liRetract, cut sutures, and perform other functions under physician supervision. /li liParticipate in the count of sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments based on the type of procedure performed. /li liHelp prepare specimens and assist with disposition of specimens. /li liApply dressings. /li liAssist with patient transfer from the procedure bed to the stretcher post‑procedure. /li liClean and restock the procedure room. /li liPull supplies and instruments for upcoming procedures. /li liAssist with maintenance of physician preference cards and inventory management. /li liAssist with decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and performance of quality testing related to sterilization and high‑level disinfection. /li liPerform other duties as assigned. /li /ul h3Qualifications /h3 ul liHigh School Diploma or GED required. /li liGraduate of a surgical technician program with documented experience. /li liBasic Life Support (BLS) prerequisite. /li li2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. /li liKnowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. /li liDemonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards. /li liMust be computer literate with basic fundamental computer skills required for essential job‑related duties. /li /ul h3Physical/Mental Demands /h3 ul liAbility to be on your feet for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients. /li liRequires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment. /li liAbility to concentrate for periods of up to four hours. /li liAbility to communicate verbally both in person and on the telephone. /li liAbility to use a computer keyboard and view a computer monitor. /li /ul h3Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities /h3 ul liMust demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients in the center. /li liDemonstrates ability to utilize recognized channels of communication. /li liDemonstrates ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, co‑workers, and other health team members. /li /ul h3Working Conditions /h3 pSurgical technologists work in clean, well‑lighted, well‑ventilated environments. Must stand for long periods and remain alert during operations. At times they may be exposed to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
