Job Description Job Title: Traveling Construction Mechanic Job Description This role performs diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance on heavy construction equipment while traveling to jobsites, customer locations, and project sites in the Greater Minnesota area. You will inspect equipment, identify complex mechanical issues, and complete field service work using advanced diagnostic tools and manufacturer software. The position requires extensive travel, hands-on mechanical expertise, and a strong commitment to safety and quality workmanship. Responsibilities • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, fuel, cooling, and powertrain issues on heavy construction equipment., • Travel to jobsites, customer locations, and project sites nationwide to perform on-site field service and repairs., • Repair and maintain a variety of equipment, including excavators, wheel trucks, aerial lifts, and forklifts., • Utilize computerized diagnostic tools and manufacturer-specific software to identify equipment faults and performance issues., • Perform engine repairs, component replacements, hydraulic system repairs, and detailed electrical troubleshooting., • Conduct routine preventative maintenance such as oil changes, filter replacements, inspections, and lubrication., • Complete accurate service reports, inspection documentation, and detailed repair records in a timely manner., • Communicate directly with project managers, equipment operators, and customers to provide status updates and repair recommendations., • Maintain the company-provided service truck, tools, and parts inventory in clean, organized, and operational condition., • Follow all company safety policies and procedures, as well as OSHA regulations and industry best practices., • Respond to emergency equipment breakdowns and provide after-hours support when necessary., • Work outdoors in various weather conditions while safely performing repairs and maintenance tasks., • Lift and handle heavy parts and components as required for repairs and maintenance activities. Essential Skills • Minimum of 3+ years of experience as a mechanic working on heavy equipment, diesel, agricultural, or construction equipment., • Strong understanding of diesel engines, including diagnostics, repair, and preventative maintenance., • In-depth knowledge of hydraulic systems and their components, including troubleshooting and repair., • Solid understanding of electrical systems, wiring, and electronic controls used in heavy equipment., • Proven mechanical troubleshooting skills to identify root causes of equipment failures and performance issues., • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical schematics., • Proficiency in performing preventative and corrective maintenance on diesel-powered equipment., • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record suitable for extensive travel., • Ability to travel extensively and work varying schedules based on project and customer needs., • Ability to lift 75+ pounds safely and repeatedly as required by the job., • Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions while maintaining safety and productivity., • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions in the field., • Effective communication skills to interact with customers, operators, and project stakeholders., • Ability to use computerized diagnostic tools and related software to identify faults and log data. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience performing field service work on heavy construction equipment at remote jobsites., • Experience in diesel engine repair, including fuel systems, cooling systems, and powertrain components., • Hands-on experience maintaining and repairing aerial lifts, forklifts, excavators, and wheel trucks., • Familiarity with preventive maintenance programs and maintenance scheduling., • Experience completing detailed service reports, inspection forms, and maintenance documentation., • Ability to manage and maintain a mobile service truck, tools, and parts inventory., • Comfort working independently with minimal supervision in remote or changing environments., • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship., • Adaptability to changing priorities, emergency calls, and after-hours service demands. The position involves frequent lifting of 75+ pounds, climbing on and off equipment, and working around active construction operations. You will use computerized diagnostic tools, manufacturer software, and a full set of mechanic’s tools stored in a company service truck, which you will maintain in clean and functional condition. Work schedules may vary based on project needs and may include after-hours or emergency callouts to respond to equipment breakdowns.
