Legal Assistant – Residential Property Tax Appeals (Temp-to-Perm) \n Location: Garden City, NY \n Department: Residential Property Tax Appeals \n Reports To: Partner \n Salary Range: $50,000–$75,000 annually (DOE) \n \n Position Overview \n Our firm is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Legal Assistant to support our Residential Property Tax Appeals practice. This position manages cases from client intake through settlement and requires frequent coordination with attorneys, clients, municipal agencies, title companies, and internal departments. \n \n This is a specialized area of law. Candidates with experience in real estate, property tax, municipal law, title, or civil litigation are encouraged to apply. Candidates with strong legal administrative experience in other practice areas who are eager to learn will also be considered. \n \n The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, is proactive, and can manage multiple deadlines while maintaining exceptional attention to detail. \n \n Key Responsibilities \n\n • Communicate with clients regarding appeal status, eligibility for new assessment challenges, and general case inquiries.\n, • Open and maintain client files, prepare engagement letters, retainers, authorizations, and attorney substitution documents.\n, • Maintain electronic case files, including deeds, assessment notices, photographs, sales documentation, and related records.\n, • Coordinate with the firm's Accounting and Filing Departments regarding case status, withdrawals, invoice questions, property sale apportionments, and client information updates.\n, • Coordinate with real estate agents, title companies, closing attorneys, buyers, and sellers to transfer pending tax appeals following property sales.\n, • Prepare legal documents and supporting materials requested by County Attorneys during settlement negotiations.\n, • Prepare settlement packages for attorney review and client execution, including settlement letters, affidavits, W-9 forms, and related documentation.\n, • Purchase NYSCEF index numbers for Article 7 proceedings and coordinate documentation with Accounting.\n, • Process Nassau County ARC and Article 7 settlements through completion, including refund processing.\n, • Maintain litigation calendars, settlement tracking spreadsheets, and case status reports.\n, • Assist attorneys with SCAR matters by obtaining comparable sales data through MLS and ATTOM Property Navigator.\n, • Coordinate with Accounting to ensure timely processing of settlement refunds.\n, • Assist attorneys with Suffolk County and Village Article 7 litigation, including calendaring and case administration.\n, • Prepare Village conversion analyses related to prior Nassau County settlements.\n, • Perform additional legal and administrative support duties as assigned.\n\n \n Qualifications: \n \n Education \n\n • Bachelor's degree preferred but not required with relevant experience.\n\n \n Experience \n\n • At least 2 years of experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or law office administrator preferred.\n, • Experience in residential or commercial real estate, property tax, title, municipal law, or civil litigation is strongly preferred.\n, • Experience managing high-volume case files and working directly with clients is highly desirable.\n\n \n Skills \n\n • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook; Access is a plus).\n, • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.\n, • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.\n, • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.\n, • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with attorneys and staff.\n, • Professional client service skills and sound judgment when handling confidential information.\n, • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.\n\n
