Job Description Job Title: Plumbing Mechanic Job Description The Plumbing Mechanic directs the installation of plumbing systems, equipment, and fixtures on a variety of construction and retrofit projects. This role is responsible for planning, laying out, participating in, and supervising plumbing work both on job sites and in the shop. The Plumbing Mechanic works with a high level of independence on most assignments, while receiving general direction and technical supervision on larger construction and modification projects. Work requests come through construction software, written job orders, and emergency calls, and completed work is reviewed for performance, user satisfaction, and compliance with specifications and building codes. Responsibilities • Plan and lay out plumbing installations and modifications based on blueprints, rough plans, sketches, drawings, and existing conditions., • Direct and supervise plumbing work on job sites and in the shop, including guiding and coordinating helpers and junior mechanics., • Install plumbing systems, equipment, and fixtures using appropriate methods, materials, tools, and equipment., • Run storm and sanitary systems, ensuring proper layout, alignment, and function., • Work with water systems, including temporary water lines, and ensure correct installation and operation., • Analyze defects and malfunctions in plumbing equipment and systems to determine necessary repairs and corrective actions., • Read and interpret blueprints and construction documents to ensure accurate installation and adherence to project specifications., • Lay out and mark locations for piping, fixtures, and related components to support efficient installation., • Perform maintenance and repair tasks received through construction software, written job requests, and emergency calls., • Ensure all construction and remodeling plumbing work complies with applicable building codes and project specifications., • Use hand tools and trade-specific equipment safely and effectively during installation and repair work., • Collaborate with on-site leads and project teams to coordinate plumbing work with other trades and construction activities., • Support plumbing construction projects including retrofits, additions, pharmaceutical facilities, and new construction up to five stories. Essential Skills • Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the plumbing trade., • Ability to analyze defects in plumbing equipment and plumbing systems and determine appropriate repairs., • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and other construction documents accurately., • Ability to lay out plumbing work from prints, rough plans, sketches, drawings, and existing or broken parts., • Strong skills in installing plumbing systems, including storm and sanitary lines, water lines, and related fixtures., • Proficiency in working with cast iron and PVC piping., • Competence in using hand tools and trade-specific equipment for installation, maintenance, and repair., • Ability to lay out and mark locations for pipes, fixtures, and equipment to support accurate installation., • Capability to supervise and work alongside helpers and junior mechanics on active job sites., • Understanding of construction and building code requirements related to plumbing work. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Cast iron installation experience is a significant plus., • Experience running storm or sanitary systems with a team of helpers., • Experience in plumbing work on retrofit, addition, pharmaceutical, and new construction projects., • Comfort working with temporary water lines and site utilities., • Ability to work with considerable independence while following general direction from on-site leads., • Experience using construction management or work order software to receive and manage job assignments. The environment is hands-on and field-focused, involving the use of hand tools, plumbing trade equipment, and construction management software for receiving and tracking assignments. Work takes place in active construction areas where coordination with other trades is common, and tasks include installation, maintenance, and repair in both interior and exterior building conditions. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Jersey City, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $37.00/hr.
