This is an excellent opportunity for a talented tax disputes professional to join a highly regarded advisory practice, working on complex HMRC enquiries, investigations, and tax dispute matters. The role offers exposure to a wide range of technically challenging cases, significant client interaction, and the opportunity to work within a collaborative specialist environment. The successful candidate will have proven experience managing HMRC Code of Practice 8 (COP8) and Code of Practice 9 (COP9) investigations, with the ability to develop effective dispute strategies, manage client relationships, and negotiate successful outcomes with HMRC. Key Responsibilities\n\n • Managing a portfolio of complex HMRC tax disputes and investigations from initial enquiry through to resolution.\n, • Leading COP8 and COP9 matters, including disclosure strategies, information requests, settlement negotiations, and resolution processes.\n, • Advising clients on dispute strategy, technical risks, potential outcomes, and engagement with HMRC.\n, • Liaising directly with HMRC investigators, technical specialists, and other professional advisers.\n, • Drafting high-quality technical correspondence, submissions, settlement proposals, and advice reports.\n, • Negotiating with HMRC to achieve commercially focused outcomes for clients.\n, • Building strong relationships with clients, intermediaries, and stakeholders.\n, • Supporting the continued growth and development of the firm's tax disputes offering.\nCandidate Requirements\n\n, • Strong experience in UK tax disputes, investigations, and HMRC enquiry work.\n, • Essential: Demonstrable experience handling COP8 and COP9 investigations.\n, • Experience managing complex tax disputes independently and negotiating with HMRC.\n, • Strong technical understanding of HMRC enquiry procedures, disclosures, penalties, settlements, and dispute resolution processes.\n, • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax matters clearly to clients.\nDesirable Experience\n\n, • Previous experience working for HMRC, particularly within Specialist Investigations, Fraud Investigation Service (FIS), or compliance teams, would be highly desirable but is not essential.\n, • Professional qualification (CTA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent) would be advantageous.\n, • Experience advising high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, owner-managed businesses, trusts, partnerships, or privately owned companies.\nThe Opportunity\n This role provides the opportunity to join a specialist boutique firm offering: \n\n • Exposure to complex, high-value tax disputes and investigations.\n, • Greater autonomy and client responsibility than typically available in larger organisations.\n, • The opportunity to work closely with experienced tax dispute specialists.\n, • Direct client involvement and meaningful ownership of cases.\n, • Flexible hybrid working arrangements.\n, • A supportive, expert-led, and entrepreneurial environment.\n\n If you are an experienced Tax Disputes professional looking for a role where your expertise will be valued and you can make a real impact within a specialist firm, this could be an excellent next step.
