Job DescriptionJob Title: Designer and Drafter – HVAC / Sheet Metal DetailerJob Description This onsite, day-shift position focuses on designing and detailing complex industrial HVAC, sheet metal, and ductwork systems, with a strong emphasis on reverse-engineering existing shipboard ventilation systems. The role is primarily office-based and involves using 3D scan data, customer drawings, and field measurements to create accurate, fabrication-ready 3D models, drawings, and complete shop packages. You will work closely with engineering, fabrication, and production teams to ensure that replacement ductwork and sheet metal assemblies are precise, manufacturable, and ready for installation, supporting long-term Navy and maritime modernization projects. Responsibilities • Reverse-engineer existing ductwork and ventilation systems using 3D scan data, customer drawings, and field measurements., • Develop detailed 3D models and fabrication-ready drawings for replacement ductwork and sheet metal assemblies., • Create complete fabrication documents, including cut lists, bills of materials, and material requirements, so the shop can build the parts accurately., • Perform detailed material takeoffs and calculate quantities required for purchasing and production., • Compile takeoff information into spreadsheets and coordinate with purchasing and material teams to support procurement and scheduling., • Support field walkthroughs aboard ships and in industrial environments to validate scope, verify measurements, and gather missing information., • Interpret existing drawings, specifications, and field data to understand current systems and define replacement solutions., • Collaborate closely with engineering, fabrication, and production teams to ensure designs are accurate, practical, and manufacturable., • Manage design projects from concept through fabrication, working independently to meet quality, schedule, and documentation requirements., • Translate real-world HVAC and ventilation systems into precise CAD models and shop packages that manufacturing teams can use directly., • Use CAD tools to model existing ductwork that may not have accurate legacy drawings and develop complete replacement designs from routing through manufacturing., • Generate clear, organized manufacturing packages that provide fabrication teams with everything needed to build sheet metal components.Essential Skills, • 5+ years of experience in HVAC detailing, with a focus on industrial or complex systems., • 5+ years of experience in sheet metal detailing and sheet metal design., • 5+ years of experience in industrial ductwork design and mechanical drafting or fabrication detailing., • Proven experience creating fabrication-ready drawings that are used directly by manufacturing or shop personnel., • Strong ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and field measurements to develop accurate models and drawings., • Demonstrated experience working independently and managing design projects from concept through fabrication., • Proficiency with AutoCAD and mechanical CAD tools for 2D and 3D modeling., • Experience with 3D modeling and reverse engineering of existing systems using 3D scans and field data., • Strong mechanical design and CAD skills related to HVAC, ducting, and sheet metal assemblies., • High attention to detail and accuracy in creating bills of materials, cut lists, and material takeoffs.Additional Skills & Qualifications, • Preferred experience with AutoCAD MEP for HVAC and ductwork detailing., • Preferred experience with Autodesk Fabrication CAMduct for sheet metal fabrication workflows., • Exposure to or interest in Design2Fab as an alternative to CAMduct., • Experience with SolidWorks for 3D mechanical and sheet metal modeling., • Familiarity with Autodesk Inventor for mechanical design and drafting., • Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)., • Experience with Rhino or similar 3D design tools., • Background in HVAC fabrication, sheet metal manufacturing, or industrial ventilation systems., • Experience in mechanical fabrication, shipbuilding or marine environments, manufacturing drafting, or pre-construction detailing., • Comfort working with bills of materials (BOM), reverse engineering tasks, and CAD-based documentation for fabrication., • Strong spreadsheet skills for organizing material takeoffs and coordinating with purchasing., • Motivation to grow into new departments and take on expanded responsibilities as the business continues to win long-term projects.Work Environment This is a fully onsite role based primarily in an office located on the second floor, accessible by stairs only. The position follows a day shift schedule of 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday. While most work occurs in the office using tools such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD MEP, Autodesk Fabrication CAMduct, SolidWorks, and other CAD and 3D modeling software, you may periodically participate in walkthroughs aboard ships or in field environments to review statements of work, verify measurements, and gather missing information. The work supports long-term Navy and maritime ship repair and modernization projects, particularly the replacement and redesign of HVAC and ventilation systems on ships.
