The role supports the successful commercial management of civil engineering projects while developing technical, contractual and commercial skills within a collaborative team environment.Role PurposeTo support the effective commercial delivery of projects by assisting with cost control, subcontract management, reporting and contractual compliance. The role contributes to accurate financial management, robust governance and value protection while developing the capability to progress within the commercial function.Key AccountabilitiesCommercial Management & GovernanceSupport the commercial management of projects in line with company proceduresEnsure compliance with company commercial procedures and corporate governance requirementsCarry out audits on contracts as requiredSupport the Managing Surveyor and Commercial Manager with accurate commercial data and reportingFinancial PerformanceMonitor and control income and expenditure on contractsProduce cost and value comparisons and turnover forecastsProduce monthly commercial reports, ensuring accuracy and completenessProduce cash flow forecasts for internal and client purposesContract & Risk ManagementProduce and process formal subcontract documentationCertify interim and final subcontract payments and final accountsProduce bills of quantities and activity schedules for payment purposesMonitor applications for payment, final accounts and late paymentsProvide feedback on pricing, projected profit or loss and pricing omissionsLeadership & CapabilitySupport senior commercial staff in delivering project objectivesActively develop commercial, contractual and technical skillsMaintain up-to-date knowledge of industry practices and proceduresDemonstrate a positive, proactive approach within project teamsStakeholder ManagementEngage with subcontractors, suppliers and client representativesAttend financial and progress meetings where requiredProvide advice and support to site teams to optimise contract resourcesWork collaboratively with estimators, contract managers and site teamsKey InterfacesCommercial Manager / Managing SurveyorProject Managers and Site TeamsEstimators and Contracts ManagersSubcontractors and SuppliersClient Engineers and RepresentativesInter-company tradingProactively optimise inter-company trading wherever possibleCollaborate effectively within the corporate group entitiesSuccess Measures (KPIs)Accuracy and timeliness of commercial reportingEffective cost and value controlCompliance with commercial procedures and governanceQuality of subcontract administration and paymentsProgression of technical and commercial capabilityAbout youEssentialAbility to use a range of IT packages, including Microsoft Office and bespoke packagesExceptional relationship-building skillsSelf-motivated and proactiveCommercial awareness and understanding of the Construction processExcellent communication skills, both oral & writtenNegotiation skills and ability to apply those skills internally, externally & with our supply chain.Positive attitude always, and the ability to integrate and play an active part in the Construction TeamGood organisational skills and the ability to prioritise meeting deadlinesDesirableDegree-qualified or equivalent, but with appropriate experience and knowledgeWide experience of the civil engineering industry with a reasonable degree of water industry experienceCSCS cardCaring and investing in youOur values have been embedded at Barhale for over 40 years, and they are our guiding principles regarding how we care and invest in people.
