We’re looking for a Staff-level Backend Engineer to help build the first production services for this context layer management system. You will design and ship the core backend architecture that powers ingestion, context storage, retrieval APIs, and agent-facing integrations. The Opportunity: The Managed Services team is a newly formed squad within the Databases department. It owns and operates shared, production-critical infrastructure that powers Grafana Cloud’s next-generation database products (Mimir, Loki, and Tempo). Today, this includes operating 100+ WarpStream clusters across multiple cloud providers and regions, with continued growth anticipated for the future. WarpStream acts as the streaming backbone for ingestion and read/write decoupling across databases. It sits directly on the hot path for metrics, logs, and traces, handling high-throughput, multi-consumer workloads at massive scale. In addition to streaming infrastructure, the team works closely with high-volume analytical and storage systems that power query-heavy and aggregation-heavy workloads, where latency, compression behavior, storage layout, and scaling characteristics matter deeply. What You’ll Be Doing: As a Senior Engineer on Managed Services, you will take ownership of running these systems in production. The Opportunity: The Grafana Alerting squad operates at the core of the Grafana open-source project _, and our mission is to provide the most in-depth way to let users manage their alerts. The backend-focused team works closely with customers and the Grafana Cloud teams to make Alerting work on-prem and at infinite scale in Cloud. Our domain is quite large, so to get an idea of the kind of work we do, here are some projects we recently worked on: • Build distributed systems to scale alert ingestion and delivery of Prometheus-based alerts, • Unify Alerting setup and delivery to work the same for Grafana and Prometheus-based alerts, • Build distributed systems to scale alert evaluation of Grafana-managed alerts, reaching over 500 evaluations per second in production. Grafana Alerting is trusted by major organizations worldwide, monitoring essential medical devices and critical infrastructure.
