Job Description Hiring for a Landfill General Laborer The Environmental Technician installs, inspects, rebuilds, troubleshoots, and repairs pumps and related equipment that support daily landfill operations. This role also performs general maintenance on pumps and assists with a variety of hands-on tasks across the site, ensuring safe and reliable operation of the leachate system in an outdoor, landfill environment. Responsibilities • Install, inspect, rebuild, troubleshoot, and repair pumps and associated equipment used in daily landfill operations., • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on pumps and related mechanical systems to ensure reliable performance., • Support general labor tasks on the landfill site, including construction-related and maintenance activities as needed., • Use hand tools and basic mechanical tools to perform installation, repair, and service work safely and efficiently., • Assist with operating heavy equipment such as skid steers and bobcats when needed, if qualified., • Support operation of vacuum (vac) trucks on site, including assisting with set-up, operation, and basic maintenance as directed., • Perform outdoor labor duties in all weather conditions, including tasks similar to carpentry, deck building, and landscaping., • Follow safety procedures and site protocols while working around pumps, heavy equipment, and landfill infrastructure., • Collaborate with a small team to maintain the landfill’s leachate system and respond to maintenance needs as they arise., • Adapt to changing daily tasks and rotate between different job duties throughout the day., • Work flexible hours, including early starts, late finishes, and occasional Saturdays, to support operational needs., • Maintain a driving record that can meet company standards in preparation for future use of company trucks and regional travel once converted to a permanent role. Essential Skills • At least 1 year of experience working on a construction job site., • At least 1 year of general labor experience in an outdoor or physically demanding environment., • Experience using hand tools for installation, repair, or maintenance tasks., • Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic troubleshooting and repair work on equipment., • Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions and in a landfill environment., • Willingness to work around pumps, mechanical systems, and heavy equipment on a daily basis., • Openness to working overtime, including early start times, late end times, and occasional Saturday shifts., • Capability to meet motor vehicle record (MVR) requirements when considered for permanent placement and use of company vehicles. Additional Skills & Qualifications • Experience with pump repair, service, or maintenance., • Experience operating heavy equipment such as skid steers or bobcats., • Experience operating or assisting with vacuum (vac) truck operations., • Experience in carpentry, deck building, landscaping, or similar outdoor labor roles., • Experience with any type of equipment installation or troubleshooting., • Comfort working in environments that may be dirty and have strong odors, such as landfill settings. Work Environment The role is based at a landfill site in Murfreesboro, TN, focused on maintaining the leachate system rather than handling garbage directly. The environment is outdoors and can be dirty, with noticeable landfill odors, and requires comfort working in all weather conditions year-round. The team is small, currently around eight people, and operates in a relaxed setting without strict manufacturing-style production quotas. Contractors may assist with operating vac trucks and, where qualified, heavy equipment such as skid steers and bobcats. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with frequent opportunities for overtime, including early start times, late finishes, and possible Saturday work. Daily duties vary, and break times such as lunch may shift depending on operational needs. Once converted to a permanent role, employees may drive company trucks and travel to other regional sites, subject to meeting driving record requirements. The dress code is practical and oriented toward outdoor, hands-on work, with appropriate attire and personal protective equipment suitable for a landfill and heavy-equipment environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Murfreesboro, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
