Assistant Shop Manager JOB DESCRIPTION Reports to: Shop Manager and Retail Manager Job Type: Permanent Location: Dorringtons Ltd, Thaxted CM6 2LD Hours: 37 Hours per week over 4 days. Wednesday to Saturday from 6.30 am until 16.15 am The Assistant Manager plays a crucial leadership role in supporting the operational success, team development, and customer service excellence of Dorringtons Ltd. As a key member of the management team, the Assistant Manager contributes to the smooth running of the store by providing strong day-to-day leadership, maintaining high operational standards, and ensuring an exceptional customer experience. The role requires hands-on involvement in both managerial duties and frontline retail operations, setting a professional example for all employees. Key Responsibilities Shop Presentation & Daily Operations Oversee smooth day-to-day running of the shop and ensure all procedures are completed accurately. Assume full managerial responsibility during the Managers days off, holidays, or absence. Share the key holding responsibility with the Branch Manager, ensuring the secure locking of the shop and the security of the safe and cash. Complete daily compliance requirements, including temperature charts and paperwork. Maintain a clean, tidy, and professionally presented store environment at all times. Ensure takeaway lines remain fully stocked throughout the day. Ensure all product/allergen labels are displayed correctly and kept up to date. Oversee stock rotation, merchandising, and replenishment to corporate standards. Ensure cleaning schedules are followed, actively participating when required. Report maintenance issues promptly and keep the Retail Manager informed. Manage stock control for dry goods, drinks, crisps, confectionery, and other relevant categories. Ensure full adherence to the four-hour rule, food safety procedures, and safe stock handling. Communicate relevant shop updates clearly to the entire team. Liaise weekly with the Store Manager/Retail Manager about sales, reconciliations, and takings. Support initiatives to maximise profitability and operational effectiveness. Leadership & Store Management Support the Store Manager in overseeing all daily store operations. Lead by example by modelling professionalism, strong work ethic, and customer-first behaviour. Motivate, supervise, and support employees to maintain high performance, strong teamwork, and consistent productivity. Foster an inclusive, positive, and high-standards work environment.
