Job Title

Care Assistant (Domiciliary Care)

Reports To

Care Coordinator / Registered Manager

Job Purpose

To provide high-quality, person-centred care and support that enables people to remain safe, independent, and comfortable in their own homes. Care Assistants will promote dignity, choice, respect, and independence while delivering care in accordance with individual care plans, company policies, and Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards.

Key Responsibilities

Personal Care

  • Assist with washing, bathing, showering, dressing and grooming.
  • Support with toileting and continence care.
  • Assist with mobility and safe transfers using appropriate equipment where required.
  • Promote independence by encouraging individuals to do as much as they are able.

Medication Support

  • Administer or assist with medication in accordance with company policies and training.
  • Record all medication administered accurately.
  • Report any medication concerns or side effects immediately.

Nutrition and Hydration

  • Prepare and serve meals according to dietary requirements.
  • Encourage adequate food and fluid intake.
  • Support individuals with eating and drinking where required.

Domestic Support

  • Carry out light household duties including:
  • Cleaning
  • Laundry
  • Ironing
  • Changing bedding
  • Shopping
  • Meal preparation

Emotional and Social Support

  • Provide companionship and emotional reassurance.
  • Encourage participation in hobbies and community activities.
  • Support individuals to maintain relationships with family and friends.
  • Promote mental wellbeing and reduce social isolation.

Health Monitoring

  • Observe and report any changes in physical or mental wellbeing.
  • Escalate concerns promptly to the Care Coordinator or Registered Manager.
  • Maintain accurate daily records and care notes.

Safeguarding

  • Protect individuals from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures at all times.
  • Report any concerns immediately.

Health and Safety

  • Work in accordance with Health and Safety legislation.
  • Use moving and handling equipment safely.
  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Record Keeping

  • Complete electronic or paper care records accurately.
  • Record medication, incidents and observations promptly.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with GDPR and company policy.

Professional Standards

  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
  • Arrive punctually for all scheduled visits.
  • Treat every individual with dignity, compassion and respect.
  • Build positive relationships with clients, families and healthcare professionals.
  • Attend mandatory training and regular supervision.
  • Participate in team meetings and continuous professional development.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Caring, compassionate and reliable.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good written and spoken English.
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in health or social care.
  • NVQ/QCF Level 2 or Level 3 in Health & Social Care.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (preferred for domiciliary care).
  • Experience supporting individuals living with dementia, learning disabilities or complex needs.
